For The New Year

I am the new year.
I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.
I am your next chance at the art of living.
I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last twelve months.

All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination.
All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.
All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have—these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.

I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, "Behold, I make all things new."

Not Me But My Attitude

For those wondering - the picture isn't really me, but it reflects my attitude. Each of us has an inner reflection of who we are. Who do you want to be? How happy in life do you want to be? It starts from within.

"We are happy when for everything inside us there is a corresponding something outside us." ~W.B. Yeats

Choices In Response

A full morning of shopping during this holiday season can be enough to test anyone's attitude. The 'sunshine' factor can certainly turn from bright and warm into dark and gloomy. With all of the shoppers and cars on the road, it is a test of will.

I found myself beginning to feel the crush of the holiday rush. Even as I was nearly tripped by a remote control car at the Discovery Store. As I walked on, I actually heard the store clerk start to chuckle. No words of apology and concern to see if I was okay. It was a pure and simple chuckle, a chortle, a snickering of what I thought was the worst kind.

In an instant I was faced with three choices;

1. Continue walking and say nothing.
2. Turn and berate the kid for his insensitivity.
3. Turn and offer my own apology for nearly breaking his merchandise.

Well, I would have continued on without saying anything, sulking in being a klutz and nearly falling. But that giggle just didn't sit well. So already being in a state of edginess from the shopping and I'm certainly not known for any love of shopping, option two was the first one to cross my mind.

As I stopped and spun around...you are free to have slow motion visions from one of your favorite movies if it will help...with a basket of words to say to this person. But as I did it occurred to me that it would not have accomplished anything. I would have been simply frustrated, the kid would have not given it a thought of some older guy berating him.

So I walked back and simply asked if the remote control car was okay. That I wanted to ensure that I had not damaged it. With a smile, it was a way of confronting the situation which did throw the kid a curve. He stuttered a bit trying to come up with words. He said all was okay and then apologized for nearly tripping me.

What effect did this have beyond my little encounter. I'd like to think that the store clerk will think differently and turn my kindness into a lesson for him. It could translate into him being a better person and possibly a better employee at his store. You can do the math for what that could mean for the store. Yet in our bigger world it just makes it better place.

Insignificant some might say, only think it insignificant the next time someone smiles your way and think maybe, just maybe someone else helped put that smile on their face.

Fear Can Be Overcome

"Most people think that courage is the absence of fear. The absence of fear is not courage; the absence of fear is some kind of brain damage. Courage is the capacity to go ahead in spite of the fear, or in spite of the pain. When you do that, you will find that overcoming that fear will not only make you stronger but will be a big step forward toward maturity." - M. Scott Peck, (Further Along the Road Less Traveled)

Keeping on the subject of fear and attitude, it isn't an easy thing to accomplish. Having the courage to overcome fear is quite possible. For fear is defined as, "...an unpleasant feeling of perceived risk or danger, real or not. Fear also can be described as a feeling of extreme dislike to some conditions/objects, such as: fear of darkness, fear of ghosts, etc. It is one of the basic emotions." (from Wikipedia).

In an online article from "Tell Me How", they indicate the following;
  • One of the most common barriers to success is simply fear of failure, which either stops us doing something, or inhibits our ability to do it as well as we can.
  • The key to overcoming fear of failure is simply persistence. By trying and trying and trying again, you cannot fail, as you will always achieve this goals this way.Determination to succeed always conquers fear of failure.
  • So many businesses are so close to success, for instance, when the owners fear failure so much that they stop short of developing something that could have been great.
  • And so with individuals, we shy away from the challenge due to fear of failure. Commit to meet challenges head on and you will overcome failure, as it will no longer be an option.
Step forward to meet your challenges, step forward to meet your fears and overcome them. You will be amazed at how much more you can do.

Overcoming Fear To Succeed

In respect for my friend in the previous article, I wanted to wait a couple of days before writing another blurb in my little patch of the world wide web. This great thing called the internet has always fascinated me. To see how ones writings can spread so wide. It starts small like a snowflake but grows and gains speed as time goes by. Pretty soon you find that your daily thoughts are out there on display for everyone to read.

Opening one self to this wide spread forum can be a bit intimidating. I've written previously that it takes courage to overcome any fear you have in making that first step. In creating this blog, my fear was in placing my words out for all to read. The fear of opening oneself to criticism or even ridicule can be a great deterrent to accomplishing things.

I've heard it said by various successful people over and over again, "...don't let your fear dictate." My yearning to help others by providing ideas and encouragement made me over come any fear of doing so. I would go so far as to say, "growth in attitude causes you to overcome, in fact demands that you overcome your fears."

Overcome your fears, one by one, step by step...see the change it will make in your life.

Touching Lives To The End

Back in mid-November, a man you may not have known passed away. Dan Thrasher, was a man who lived and touched people in ways I am sure he never imagined. It happened with me and it happened with many other fellow employees within my company and outside in his personal life. In battling cancer, he kept an amazing attitude towards life and those that he came in contact with. One of his many loves in life was that of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. A good friend of his arranged to have Harley-Davidson shirts from around the world secretly sent to Dan. It is reported that his eyes lit up every time the FedEx truck pulled up.

I knew Dan only slightly as we had worked on site together on a couple of occassions. But when I heard about this gesture of wonderment for Dan, many of us worked to locate and find shirts from around the world. In doing so, fellow employees from around the world were able to hear of this wonderful story. Each of these people were moved to appreciate more of life and their part in it. Each reinforced for me the goodness in life that each of us possesses. Dan set that in motion without realizing it. I'm sure he knows it now.

In one of my endeavors to find a shirt in Germany, with the best of mapped directions and advice from locals it was an adventure. Finding the local Harley-Davidson store put me in touch with many different people. Asking for directions puts one in contact with people one may otherwise not meet. It showed to me that there is goodness in everyone. It was Dan Thrasher that put this in motion. By being a person that touched one person he touched hundreds or maybe even thousands.

Each of you have that ability as well to touch everyone in your daily life. Dan Thrasher dropped a pebble into the still water. The ripple effect has passed through many of us and it will pass through you. As you go about your job and more importantly your personal life, know that you impact everyone you come in contact with. Allow the ripple to flow beyond to all that you touch.

Forward Movement In Attitude

Not long ago I heard a story of pushing yourself to step out, of going beyond what is within your comfort zone. You make that move forward and you breath a sigh of relief. Then you are asked to step even further.

It is with that first step that many more will follow. Choosing to have a great attitude is a first step. But then I ask that you do more with that attitude. It isn't enough to step forward and declare that a positive attitude will be a driving force in your life. It isn't enough to experience the wonders that come with this new found attitude.

Now comes the next step of using this new attitude to make the world around you better. Remember the pebble in the water article some time ago. You start things in motion and they carry out in waves to others. But be assured that every time you step forward in action to a place you think you should be, more will be expected.

It is with both faith and confidence that you make these moves. It isn't easy knowing that the more you do, the more that will be expected. But with each step it will become easier. Your confidence will increase and faith in yourself will abound. Only thing is...you have to make the choice to move. Expect more each time you move and accept it with a positive heart.

Think Of Life And The Good That Could Be

The marking of the 25th Anniversary of John Lennon's death (Thursday 12/08) evokes discussion and wonderment of a man that some adored and others didn't. But I bring up this day as an example of the positive hope someone can share.

As a member of The Beatles he was quite astounding and in his solo career that success was hard to top. But he tried many things to make this world a better place. It sometimes ruffled the feathers of others and at times his actions seemed to contradict himself. But he wrote a song that many are familiar with, IMAGINE.

This song has been labeled naive and too simplistic by its critics. Still others have taken it as a battle cry for a utopian ideal that all should live under. I myself see it as a small way to simply push people to the better good. To 'imagine' that we can bring goodness to the lives of others in the short time we are alive.

Here are the words to this song and see if you can see the hope generated within words.

=================
Imagine there's no heaven, It's easy if you try, No hell below us, Above us only sky, Imagine all the people living for today...

Imagine there's no countries, It isnt hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, No religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions, I wonder if you can, No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man, Imagine all the people Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer, but Im not the only one, I hope some day you'll join us, And the world will live as one.

Just 'imagine' that you can make a difference in this world by the things you do.

If You Can't Be There - Go Online

Sharing a picture of the Roman Coliseum from my visit to Rome recently. Truly a wonder to see.

Continuing To Read And Listen

I've been watching a great program on television, a speaker named Andy Andrews. There are moments and waves of inspiration that effect each of our lives. For me a particularly high spot has come from listening to Mr. Andrews.

I won't say a whole lot about him today, but will do so over the next few days. When I get moved by listening or reading someone...such as I did with Paul McGee and his S.U.M.O book, I have to take a bit of time to collect my thoughts and really let the message soak in.

Said before many times from me and you'll have heard from others, reading and listening to others can have an impact. Keep yourself in a learning mode and I'll try to help by putting some of this great stuff out there for you.

A Glass Full Of Attitude

John C. Maxwell wrote, "do you feel the world is treating you well? If your attitude toward the world is excellent, you will receive excellent results. If you feel so-so about the world, your response from that world will be average. Feel badly about your world and you will seem to have only negative feedback from life."

Often I repeat myself in these articles but find that we have to remind ourselves constantly. How your life rolls out before you is a direct reflection of how you view the world. Attitude is determined by you and is influenced by many factors. If you view the world in a negative manner, chances are it will be a negative world you end up living in. But view the world in a positive light and the balance will tilt towards better things happening to you.

The old axiom that asks if the glass is half full or half empty misses the point of attitude. A positive attitude doesn't try to answer that question. What it trys to do is figure out how to fill the glass even further. It isn't about them (half full) versus those (half empty), it simply looks for a way to improve the situation.

Don't live life half empty, nor live it half full - live to fill it everyday.

An Attitude Filled With Light

When you step out of the darkness of a poor attitude, the light around you becomes brighter. It is similar to what people say about a woman that is pregnant. She carries a glow of wonder and life around her. You can notice it, you can feel it when you are near. This same thing occurs around those that choose the better side of life.

It is with that glow you will see that people are attracted to light, not to darkness. There will of course be curiousity to peek into that darkness. But darkness can not sustain you. Think of isolation methods in which a prisoner is placed alone and in a room without light. After varying amounts of time you will weaken. A sliver of light shining through a crack becomes the hope.

Light becomes the thing you gravitate towards, the one thing that provides warmth and happiness. It draws you out and allows you to see so much better. Options and decisions will become much more clear. With this your attitude will brighten as well and a glow will begin to develop around you.

You will begin to notice that others will be drawn to that glow, that light that is developing around you. Let the light flow through you and out to others. They will gain from your great attitude as it grows. You will pull further and further from the darkness of a poor attitude. Life will become clear. Find a candle to break the darkness.

"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." - Buddha (Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, the founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.)

Being Positive About Everything

In his book titled, 'You The Leader', Phil Pringle says that "...positive attitude is everything. It is vital to see the upside of everything." The book is about leadership and attitude from a theological view but has very relevant applications in the secular world. You can take learning from many different sources and this is one source I find very helpful.

So just how does one do this. We've seen the TV version of the wide-eyed, nothing ever bothers, nicer than thou characters. I basically worry about folks that are that way all of the time. In reality, we all have our down times but the trick is to understand the down time and adjust. To bring ourselves back up to a positive -not ridiculous - level.

By being positive about anything and everything becomes the key to being able to spot opportunity. Being positive about anything and everything becomes a key to being able to brighten the lives of others around you. When you work on your inner self and bring about a positive attitude, then you see more clearly. You see the opportunity that was always there.

A poor attitude blinds us to things that can benefit us. Think of a poor attitude as sitting in darkness. Difficult to see that which is within reach...but I'll talk more about that tomorrow.

Motivate Yourself Into Greatness

When you decide to go beyond the expected, you come to the realization that to do so it takes self motivation. A realization that you need to have your own attitudes in order which will allow you to go beyond the expected. The great thing about it is that you can do it. The power to have a great attitude and turn that into great service to others in within all of us.

You wonder, wait a minute, I'm not in customer service. Some articles back I talked about our lives actually being a series of opportunities to serve others. Mahatma Gandhi said, "the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." You do many little things each day that is in service to others.

Once you motivate yourself, you work to motivate others. It takes work at first, but it eventually comes naturally. You keep moving yourself towards this goal. Taking on motivating others will increase your own motivation. Its an aspect that when you do good for others, it generates a natural good feeling within yourself. That can be very motivating for you and do wonders for your own attitude.

It will feed upon itself much like negativity can feed upon itself. Negativity is much more destructive and is much easier to achieve. This is why having a great attitude and the ability to motivate others isn't easy. Negativity is all of those rocks in your wagon.

But once you get a positive vibe moving, it begins to pick up speed and feed upon itself. It begins to build and grow, blocking out the negative things from having as large of an effect. Pretty soon great things start happening to you and those around you. Consider yourself on a road to better and brighter things.

Rise Above Customer Expectations

I'm back in the country and will get back onto a regular schedule of articles. My time spent in Italy and Israel was very productive but I was unable to keep up with my writing. It comes with the territory when one is involved in customer service.

There are things one can do that transcend language or even culture. It is accomplished by simply going beyond what others expectations are. It is easy to have an attitude that you must do only the job required of you. That can work and many people do it on a daily basis. Things get done, issues are corrected and lives go on. Yet doing so, we remain the same. There is no advancing of our lives, no betterment of those around us.

Doing things beyond expectations should be your calling in all that you do. Much like having a positive attitude and spreading it on, we must also do the extra things. If I only provide the minimum required when working with a customer, they may be satisfied. Going beyond the expected sends a message. It says I'm willing to do more for them. Willing to keep and earn additional business from them.

Have you ever been to the mechanics shop with some car affliction that will test your pocket book and nerves? It is a trip that most of us dread and simply wish to avoid if at all possible. There are some mechanics that would simply correct the problem, charge you a price and you are on your way. Satisfied that it was fixed and potentially money left for a cup of coffee, you head for home.

What of those mechanics that step out in a manner that exceeds your expectation. The same problem is fixed, the same price is paid, but you notice more. A seat cover and floor mat was used to keep grease and dirt from the interior. Maybe they washed the vehicle once completed and a spritz of air freshener inside. Could be they topped off the fluids for you and did it all with a smile and great attitude.

Once again, satisfied that it was fixed and maybe enough money for a cup of coffee you head for home. But something is different this time, a bigger smile on your face, a better feeling inside that it was not such a bad experience. Chances are much greater you will return to that same mechanic. Next time it won't be quite as bad when you have to take your car in.

The mechanic knew what many successful business people and successful people know, going beyond wins long term customers. The cost of going that extra step is heavily out weighed by what you will earn. Be bold, go beyond and see the success that can be yours.

Life Is Not Perfect - Get Over It

It has been a few days since my last post and I apologize to all. When on the road my days become greatly filled with activity. Finding the opportunity to sit down and write can be difficult. Being on the road itself can be difficult. I am currently handling a customer situation and all aspects of the situation have to be considered.

A friend, Dean Sweetman said "life is run by imperfect people. You will get offended at some point. So get your own 'stuff' dealt with. It will prepare you to handle this imperfect life." This statement is so true. You will run into things that may frustrate or cause your plans to go a different direction.

How you handle these situations or events is greatly impacted by how you have handled your own 'baggage'. We all have it and we need to figure it out first before we can successfully handle issues outside of our own. The primary thing that effects this will be our own attitude. A great quote from Phil Pringle is, "the problem is never the problem. The real problem is our attitude toward it."

Life isn't perfect and neither are we. But strive for excellence in your own attitude and life. It will equip you for the bigger and more imperfect world around us.

First Impressions

When you have the chance to deal with people, we instinctively draw lasting conclusions based on their appearance, attitude and actions. It can be difficult to move from this opinion once it is established. Many people hold on to this 'first impression' and will allow it to dictate the relationship going forward.

In previous articles, I've mentioned that only you can dictate the way you respond to other people, not them. This 'first impression' is simply an influence on your own attitude. You have to see past and get to know this person. A good friend of mine, Dean Sweetman is quoted as saying, "see people not for who they are, but for what they can become."

This is so true - difficult, but true - in how you should conduct and adjust your own attitude. If you can achieve this, your potential to succeed is enhanced. You may find that these people have great potential that you can unlock. And in unlocking potential in others, you expand your own potential. And guess again, it all starts with a positive attitude.

So don't limit yourself by 'first impressions'. Look for possibilities, look for potential and see that it will impact your life.

A Fight Of Faith In Your Attitude

The act of making a change in your life becomes a fight of your faith. When you decide to step out everything will change. What do you do when others try to put up road blocks of criticism or negativity of what you are trying to accomplish. You stand firm, you keep your faith in what you know is the right thing.

Many people choose to simply stay on the sideline and watch life go by. You have to be the type of person that wants to engage. The type of person to come off the sidelines and enter the game of life. I've watched many a football game in my life and become amused at those that are always on the sidelines.

Think of an aggressive play that ends up out of bounds. The offensive player makes a long play and is tackled out of bounds by the defensive player. Always you'll have a sideline sitter (in this case the defense) talking trash to the offensive player who was just tackled. It is easy to be loud and vocal when you have no stake in the actual play. Put those words and ideas to use - come into the game of life and make a difference.

When you come out though...remember there will be a fight. Be prepared for it because it will be easy at first. But be assured that there will be those that wish to bring you down, that will try to turn your good work to into something bad. Stick to your belief, stay to your faith, remain positive through out. You will succeed, you will come through in the final analysis.

"Always there will be, along the sidelines of life, inferior souls who throw mud at those whose attainments they do not quite understand. The man who really accomplishes doesn't pay attention to such detractors. If he did, he'd be on their level. He keeps an eye singled on the higher goal--and the mud never touches him." - Jerome P. Fleishman (The Forbes Book of Business Quotations)

Be a player in the game of life - come out onto the field of play and make a change.

Positive Change By Being A Positive Energized Person

A few days have gone by without much writing. My job has been busy this week and am preparing for a trip overseas. Another chance to put my own thoughts and methods to use in front of customers. It will also be a chance to meet with people of different nationalities. Even when a different language becomes a barrier, you have to find a way to bridge that gap.

It can be nerve wracking at times and seem overwhelming. Similar to what you may be thinking when trying to make change in your own life. It can happen that you are sitting at work wondering what it is you can do different. Work harder, take more classes - get smarter? It was written and where I can't remember right now, but it was advice being given to a new university president. He was told to take care and be nice of your top students, they will one day return and be great professers. But take even greater care of your 'C' students, for they one day will return with a check for millions to build a new facility.

It isn't the smartest that succeed all of the time. It is found that many times that the difference in success is your attitude. "Most of those who succeed in achieving their goals do it by creating an environment for opportunity. They feel that they are entitled to go after what they want in life... They open themselves to positive change by becoming positive, energized people. They don't limit themselves with a poor self-image or a negative attitude. They get rid of negative baggage that holds them back. They believe in themselves, giving others cause to believe in them." - Stedman Graham, (You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan For Success)

So it doesn't take being the smartest one with the highest grades. You don't have to have the huge college degree - it helps though - but having all of these things is nothing without attitude. So keep trying, go that extra amount and see what happens. Good things can only come your way.

It may be a day or two in between while I'm gone...but stick with me. Together we'll get your life moving towards its potential.

Roller Coaster

Seoul Land Amusement Park in the Seoul Grand Park.

Riding Lifes Journey

Where does one come out in the end once change begins? Are you looking for a final answer, the prize or the brass ring? You've smiled at someone, allowed a yielding car into line and told someone what a great job they've done. Now you are thinking, here come the rewards. Just sit back and let it all flow to me.

I certainly wish it were so. It doesn't end until life ends...you will constantly be striving to live a great and positive life. And as you do, good things will happen to you. Of course it won't be like winning the lottery. Then again, there might be one or two of you that actually do win the lottery. But a windfall as such doesn't guarantee happiness.

So you keep moving forward, doing those things that I talk about. It can be a Roller Coaster ride but it is a lot more fun then a Merry-Go-Round. Instead of simply going round and round, think about the ups and downs and twists and turns. Heart thumping thrills and unexpected excitement every bit of the way.

Expect that it won't be easy all of the time, expect that with every low comes a new high. It isn't to say that you suffer emotional extremes, but understand that life will throw you curves. (see how I moved from an amusement park theme to a sports theme) Enjoy it and as I've stated before this way of life will become second nature. Have a great time with your life.

Maybe Change Jobs

There are those of you looking to change careers to better your condition. A change in attitude helps but you may say...a new environment, a new place to spread my wings. Are you ready for that kind of change?

In her book, "Radical Careering: 100 Truths to Jumpstart Your Job, Your Career, and Your Life", Sally Hogshead digs into ways which will help you make that jump. She speaks of several things but a few of the '100 radical truths' that ring home with me are;

- Being in a crap job isn’t your fault, but staying in a crap job is

How true this is. I hear people from time to time in my own business of how much they dislike what they do. Or just how bad the job is that they must perform. I happen to love my job and what I do so it is difficult to understand at times. But my first response to them is, 'then why not do something else?' No one is keeping you here, it isn't some external force that says you must work here. It is letting yourself blame others for your condition that is keeping you in that horrible, depressing job. Take responsibility and make a change.

- Mistakes are tuition

I have made so many in life that a whole series of college courses could be put together. But I'm not alone in this...everyone makes mistakes. I expect that mistakes will be made and lessons learned from them. It isn't that I am happy that mistakes were made nor do I purposely allow them to happen. But I do acknowledge that they will happen. Take time to be irritated with yourself in acknowledging a mistake, then move on...remember...SUMO from earlier articles.

- Make your memoirs worth reading

This is what everyone down deep has in them. How will I be able to look back over my life. How will others look back over my life. You may state that you don't really care..and there are those like that...but then again those folks wouldn't be reading my words. Make it a story to be proud of, one that can give insight to others to guide them, to offer inspiration to others, to simply be able to look back with no regrets that you didn't try harder to make the world a little bit better place to live in.

Live On The New Oil Of Life

Are you stuck in an old way of doing things? Are you convinced that things are moving along just fine, no need to change your attitude?

I listened to a speaker last night talk of change, stepping out and leadership. What I came away with was that many of us cruise along in life. A manner in which we feel that nothing needs to be done, leave things as they are for I am content. But to move ahead in life, to better your own life and effect change in others - you have to change.

From hearing what he had to say, I came up with the following belief. "We can live on the old oil of life, but our lives will be much better if we change and live on the new oil of life." The old can sustain your life for varying lengths of time. But eventually it slows you and causes more wear. With the new it invigorates and brings renewed positive changes into your life.

But how do you change your oil of life? For me, creating this blog was my first step in moving to do something. Expressing a belief in words was another change. The potential to do both is in everyone. You may not know what it is you want to do. My suggestion is to just move, do anything, make any change. It will come to you but standing still gets you nowhere.

Make a move to change and see that it makes a change in your life.

Defeat The Negative

You may be seeing that the theme of attitude matters in our daily lives. Without even trying, you can effect those around you. While at work, taking the high road and conducting yourself in a positive manner will eventually effect those around you. Should you be one that is always talking down your condition in life will take its toll on others.

This may sound like it goes against what I said in an earlier article that no one can dictate your attitude. What it means is that you can effect others...it is up to those individuals to change their own behaviour. But even for yourself, constantly being in a negative environment will alter the way your attitude changes in subtle and destructive ways.

So as a person that wants the best in life for you, your family and those around you...be aware of negative environments. Try to remove yourself from those conditions if possible. But know that you can effect change as well within negative environments by being positive. In the workplace, be the one to lead change, to lead others to a better life.

But wait...I don't want to carry that weight of responsibility! You're not carrying it, no one is holding you responsible for changing others. What you are responsible for is yourself. If you carry yourself out of the negative, others will follow in due time. And those that don't follow, then it becomes their loss. Do not allow them to drag you back into their condition.

"Never talk defeat. Use words like hope, belief, faith, victory." - Norman Vincent Peale

Attitude by Maxwell

Attitude...
It is the "advance man" of our true selves.
Its roots are inward but its fruit is outward.
It is our best friend or our worst enemy.
It is more honest and more consistent than our words.
It is an outward look based on past experiences.
It is a thing which draws people to us or repels them.
It is never content until it is expressed.
It is the librarian of our past.
It is the speaker of our present.
It is the prophet of our future.
- John C. Maxwell

Let your attitude guide you to a better life.

Keeping The Brave Face

When times get tough within a company, the rhetoric about the importance of customer service heats up. Companies know that their business depends upon keeping their customers from fleeing to others. It is with that in mind that the buzz words and articles that company officials will start trumpeting to anyone that will listen.

This becomes a tough situation for both employers and employees to work through. When times are good, companies will do what they can to keep customer service a top priority. But it is during those times with expanding labor rolls that not everyone has the same level of commitment to customer service.

So whether business is good or in a down period, you as an employee have to work at keeping your attitude positive. Employers have to keep an atmosphere that enables personnel to excel at this. As humans we tend to put off doing so until it becomes much too late in the game. It is now that you need to take action.

Times are bad at your company...what do you do? Put on the brave face and keep plugging along, keeping your head low hoping to make it through the next round of cuts. That's it, blend in and hope no one takes notice. And the employers...speak loudly about the importance of customer service and how customers are number one. Things will quietly spin in an ever downward spiral until a buyout or shutdown occurs.

Take a bold step, do something different and be the one to stand up. Work to bring customer service to reality, be vocal to others around you. Don't be another of the water cooler complainers whining about how the boss isn't doing enough for you. Be a part of the solution and lift others around you. As an employer, if you state customer service is important then you should be providing your employees the ability to provide that level of service. Don't just state the importance and demand it of emloyees.

What I'm getting at is that all parties involved (employees and employers) have a stake in this. Whether business is good or declining, it takes more then saying the words. It takes stepping out boldly and doing something. Lifting yourself, others around you - your customers will notice the difference between a positive attitude and 'putting on a brave face'.

On The Road Home

Well - I'm traveling home over today and tomorrow so I'll miss an article or two. Coming home is always a great thing but what makes the travel easier to bare is good customer service. Surprisingly it does not take a whole lot to make it easier either.

A hotel employee remembering your name, the airport ticket counter being quick and friendly and an airport lounge to relax in making the stress of travel easier. I've had those times where a ticket counter employee just couldn't seem to be pleasant at all. It is those times when you have to convince yourself to be the bigger person and smile. Getting angry just doesn't solve anything, raises tension in yourself, the other person and those around you.

But when I encounter the good customer service, the quick customer service and the 'doing just a bit more for you' customer service...then those people have made a difference. Airlines are having a tough thing going right now and it will be interesting to see if customer service is effected.

In one particular airline magazine for a major airline based out of Atlanta that recently entered bankruptcy - no names but you probably know - they are talking now two months running about how important customer service is. This tells me they are concerned that it could become an issue and their employees are going to be struggling to maintain a positive attitude.

It will take a lot of hard work and convincing by this company to keep the employees in a good frame of mind. But each of the individual employees have to take on the task as well. As an individual, you need to assume the responsibility of maintaining your own attitude. As an employer, you need to foster an environment in which individuals can achieve that attitude.

I hope the best for this company and more so for the employees of that company. I went through a situation of downsizing at a company before being bought out. People that I knew lost their job...but those that were able to remain, including myself had to work through the negative feelings and keep a good attitude. Not only for customers, but for our families, friends and ourselves.

Work through it folks as only you can. Keep up the the great attitude and I'll pass it along as well when I pass through the airports in my travels. See you in a couple of days.

Moving Yourself To Do Something

Just to prove that I do possess a sense of humor - when considering everything I'm talking about, you have to keep it in perspective. Many times I refer to making a change or getting up and just starting. But people do procrastinate and I'm one to do it as well. But before talking on why we procrastinate I thought I'd share the above with you. It comes from one of my favorite sites where motivation can actually be accomplished by demotivating humorously. Reminds me of the 'reverse psychology' each of us has tried on our kids! (www.despair.com)

So why do we procrastinate then? In Paul McGee's book S.U.M.O - he offers up five reasons for doing so. Those reasons are;

1. Avoiding Discomfort - if it doesn't feel good, don't do it.

2. Emotional Barriers - when you remain a prisoner to your emotions, you may never know the freedom of success.

3. Fear of Failure - failure isn't fatal until you stop trying.

4. Complacency - wake up and smell the coffee, life at its longest is still fairly short.

5. Action Illusion - when all is said and done, more is said than done.

He also offers a way to conquer procrastination and this is going to sound earth shattering - "...just start it. That's right, just do something. Do not worry about completing the task or how much time it will take to finish - just start it."

In my own personal life, this is how I battle it as well. I just get up and start doing something. We expend so much energy on convincing ourselves why not to do it. Simply turn that energy into doing something, anything and you'll start a change in your life. Go ahead and don't "despair", enjoy the road of accomplishment...but you first have to get up, point yourself down a road and start moving.

Leading The Way

In many of my articles, I speak about you making the change. Of you changing your attitudes which then makes you a defacto leader of the charge to greater customer service. Or simply a charge to a better life.

In an article titled "The American Salesman" - 9/2/2005(C) 2005 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; Barnett Helzberg, Jr. - he states, "...Everything you do communicates. You always set an example, either positively or negatively. If your goal is to develop, or upgrade, your business culture to reflect great customer service, you will need to exercise the kind of leadership that involves every one of your associates, whether or not they deal directly with external customers." He also says, "simply put, an attitude of "Do what I tell you, not what I do," will guarantee failure."

So if you want to make a change for the better in your business, in your relationships, within your family and within your own personal life, lead the change and lead by example. As I've said in previous articles and Mr. Helzberg says, "...the lesson? Find every opportunity to show your customers you want to take care of them. Thank your customers for taking the time to complain. Resolve problems with joy. Make your customers feel special. Create an atmosphere of fun. Provide great service and you will own your customers. It's that simple."

Lead the way for "you are not only good yourself, but the cause of goodness in others." (Socrates)

Would You Ever See This

This is my second time in Thailand and when travelling, I try to see subtle differences in how people conduct themselves. The Thai people are very friendly and in many situations they express gratitude for serving you by use of a custom of greeting called "Wai". This custom is performed by placing one's hands together with all fingers pointing straightforward, raising them up to about chest level and bowing one's head down towards them at the same time.

While performing a "Wai", the individual says "Sawasdee" ("Good morning" or "Good evening"). This shows respect, humbleness and friendliness to each other, especially to the elders. Apart from being used for greeting, it is also performed to express thankfulness or the equivalent to an English word "Thank you".

It can become overwhelming at times since many Thai perform this for most everything you encounter. And I thought to myself, could this happen in the U.S. or Europe? Certainly it isn't in our culture to do so. But it is within our culture to simply be polite, humble and thankful to people we encounter. Being confident in yourself will give you the ability to do it. Can you imagine how much easier life would be if more of us conducted business this way.

I'm not talking about 'blue skies' and 'touchy feely' things here. I'm talking about knowing that you can effect change in people by your actions. It will be a greater experience for you and those around you. It will result in more satisfied customers. It will result in repeat business. It will result in greater personal growth.

So thank you - I appreciate you reading my thoughts and beliefs. I appreciate your comments and do hope you are gaining something from this.

Are You Or Your Employees Aware

"Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have." - Doris Mortman, Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach.

So just how are you conducting yourself in the workplace? Are you happy with who you are and your circumstances? Does this spill over into your job and the way you conduct yourself. There was a great article in USA Today called "Getting bad reception?" (Kim Painter. USA TODAY. McLean, Va.: Oct 3, 2005. pg. D.6) in which she speaks about customer dissatisfaction with people behind the desk.

A couple of things pointed out were one, receptionists who don't look at the patients standing before them. Basically ignoring them while they stay glued to the computer screen or talk amongst themselves behind the desk. Secondly staff personnel making off-hand remarks either about other patients or the workplace.

Both of the above can be very detrimental to your business and shows poorly of yourself if you are the one doing so. First and foremost...customers are there for a reason, to give you or your company their business. If you are an employee, this translates into a bottom-line view of, more business, the company makes money, you get to stay employed or as an employer you get to keep your business open.

If you have a staffer at your front desk failing to acknowledge a customer right away, you have problems. It is very true that if you provide good service to someone and they will tell one other person. But provide bad service to someone and they will tell ten other people. What you need to do (for yourself or that employee) is to find out first if it is happening. Then find out what the issue is behind it.

As the quote states, unless you are at peace with yourself, you'll never be content. Could be that the person is not satisfied with the job or simply isn't the right person for that position. But you could impact that person. Help them or yourself to change attitudes.

I see these types of folks in my own company and the thing I try to do is give encouragement to change. Talking about the positive things, offering alternatives to whatever condition exists and not getting drawn down into the depths with them. A quote by Dilbert that I modified states, "Never argue with an negative person. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience."

Be a lifting person, help them change their world.

Don't Go Away - Just Smile

I'm traveling to Bangkok this week to present at a conference of service professionals. So I might be a bit late in posting over the next few days. I always enjoy the diversity of presenting in different geographies as the type and level of customer service can vary. What may be deemed good service in Thailand would be considered over the top in Ireland.

The people all vary of course as you can imagine. But in the bigger picture, everyone really remains the same. They get up in the morning and get the kids ready for school, fight traffic getting into work and labor through the day earning their living. They make their way home in the evening to make supper, relax a bit and maybe a school or church function to attend. It is then off to bed to try and get enough sleep to do it all over again the next day.

Having a positive attitude and bringing a smile to others does cross international borders and languages. It is amazing how a smile to someone can light up their day. Combining confidence in oneself and a simple kind gesture can make a change in your work life, in your family life and in your everyday life.

So "kor hai chok dee" (good luck) with your smile and pass it on.

Rockefeller Center

Another story in confidence - John D. Rockefeller, who in spite of the Great Depression managed to build this huge office complex while others predicted his failure.
He had confidence when others didn't believe.

http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/US/NY/NewYorkRockefellerCenter.html

It Is In You

"If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started." - Marcus Tullius Cicero (Ancient Roman Lawyer, Writer, Scholar, Orator and Statesman, 106 BC-43 BC)

To make change in your life and impact others, you need to have confidence in yourself. There can be no lasting improvement in attitude or ability without it. To have it will give you the power to make changes and impact others.

It is a matter of believing in yourself...in trusting yourself...in being that person you want to be. Without confidence, there is a part of you that will not be able to change lives, including yourself. This confidence is within everyone, me, you and those people you interact with on a daily basis.

Take a moment and believe in yourself. Let those issues that are holding you back go and grab onto a belief in you. There are going to be failures but without failures success will never occur. An example is a very dear woman I know. She felt that her ability to speak in front of others was simply not hers to have. It was a piece of confidence that was missing.

But there were others in her life that gave her support, gave her belief in herself, kept her believing in herself. What did it accomplish? It was confidence she finally saw in herself. She has had very successful presentations, speaking in front of varied groups. But the confidence that builds in a person will persevere. That confidence in turn will flow from her (or yourself) in helping others. Do those things in life to build your confidence in you and in others.

Change The World Every Day

An article appeared in the Omaha World Herald this weekend about a gathering of business students at the Lied Center on the University of Nebraska Lincoln campus. They listened to Warren Buffett and Bill Gates speak more about human values then about money.

(see http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=2033024&u_rnd=2006845 - Common Interests Connect)

Mr. Buffett is quoted as saying, "you're changing the world everyday." This in response to a question about how an individual could make the world a better place and not be discouraged by the size of the task (as noted in the article). What his meaning is that you can effect change on a daily basis. All of the little things you do will add up in life. Your behavior dictates and sets off a chain reaction of other reactions and possibilities.

In the work place, this can have a broadening impact on both the work place environment and in keeping and improving customer relations. In a small company these little things can impact or be seen fairly quickly. In a large corporation, as Mr. Buffett indicates, "..no corporation can ensure that all its employees act properly all the time. Somebody's always doing something wrong."

As an employee, you can see things within your sphere of influence and effect change simply by altering your behavior. By improving your attitude and passing that along both to your customers and to other employees. It doesn't take a large amount of money, you don't have to be a famous person and you don't have to be perfect. You simply need to have the will to change your own attitude and then pass it along to others. Not preaching and I repeat, not preaching to others...but by your actions, by your behaviors.

One of my early articles stated, '"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny."

Dare to bring something new into your world and see if it doesn't change things.

Feeling That Love and Confidence

In Dilbert, Wally tries to coerce his boss into giving him a raise by threatening that he has a job offer from another company. You then see in Wally's thoughts, "..sit back and let the loving begin." But his boss is quietly speaking on the phone to security, "...whack him in the parking lot."

http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/images/dilbert2005016279930.gif

Ever have this type of feeling at your job? Scott Adams does a wonderful job of pointing out the truths and misbeliefs of the work place. What I suggest this means is that you can't simply 'expect' things to happen in life. Believing in this method will normally produce unexpected consequences.

Now I would say that the 'Wally' character has a great amount of confidence. But anyone that has followed the comic strip will know that Wally really hasn't done anything in his career to help others. It has always been about himself. So this isn't the type of confidence that I'm going to be talking about.

"Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings." - Samuel Johnson (The Book of Positive Quotations"

More to be said over the next day or so on confidence.

Can I Get That Door For You?

"You will find, as you look back upon your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others." - Henry Drummond (1851-1897)

Your day is filled with serving others and you may not even realize it. Allowing someone in line as you drive to work, opening the door for someone or simply doing your job. You help your spouse with the dishes, the kids with homework or a neighbor move a desk.

Most everything you do during the day entails serving (helping) others. And this elaborate intertwining of peoples lives means that you are served as well through out the day. What you receive in return is many times directly proportional to the level of servitude you extend to others.

It can be humbling to do so but you need to have confidence in yourself and a positive attitude that you can change other peoples lives throught small acts of kindness. That confidence is something I recently heard someone speak about. It struck a cord with me that you may find as well...but I'll leave that for next time.

So my final thought is that you serve even though you may not realize it. Serve with a joyful heart and with the knowledge that you will receive in kind the same. At times this may not happen...but most times it will. You have nothing to lose and all the world to gain. Can I get that door for you?

Path of Stones

Well, I've heard from a few folks about letting go of things. Of changing their ways and at trying to bring something different into their lives. You could view it as pulling a little red wagon. It's the type you may have had as a child. But this one is full of rocks, little pepples, jagged ones, big ones and maybe one or two really big ones.

These rocks represent things in your life that could be considered troubles and worries. Little ones may be irritation that it is raining outside. Another one may be an argument with a co-worker, while a large one could be a troubled marriage. All of these add in weight to the wagon you must pull through life.

As life goes on, you try to remove rocks from the wagon. Using them to lay a pathway for your life. Life itself may place rocks into your wagon. Sort of like driving through a 'falling rock' zone and a few ending up with you. Other people will place rocks into your wagon as you pass by. Instead of using those rocks to build their own road, they place them upon you.

What you need to do is to eliminate the little ones first as the large ones are harder to move. They take longer to remove. But you take those pebbles and build a base for your life's path. The wagon becomes lighter and easier to pull leaving you more strength and energy to build. What you will find is that the largest rocks don't seem so large anymore. Those large rocks can be difficult to handle, but they become manageable.

You will see that the path of life starts out with a lot of smaller stones but as you learn not to carry the small ones...the path is built with ever increasingly larger stones. The little ones will be used to fill in the gaps of the large ones. A great and solid path will unfold beneath you.

Examine Your Surroundings

I hear many times during the work week people at issue with their job or life that is going on around them. To listen you would wonder how it is that they struggle to even get up in the morning to face the world. But as I listen it strikes me that they seem to have a few things in common.

One is that they have this perpetual wallowing in self doubt and complaining of their surroundings. I've always wondered why they remain within that constant cycle of life. Maybe it would be better to simply step back. Look at your life, 'examine your surroundings' and begin to understand what influences are around you.

Now is the time to figure out what is happening in your world that forever holds you back. Change things in your life...maybe a different radio station...maybe a different route to work...maybe just a determination to change your own attitude.

Those influences in your life are very powerful in a subtle way. Do you congregate with friends that are alway down on things? Try meeting more positive people and not to bring your troubles and pains to them. But to listen and catch the spirit of their life.

I've always felt the old adage that tell me your sad story and I'll tell you a hundred sadder stories. What happens to you, to me or to others is life. Life itself is an influence on us and how we choose to respond is up to us.

I have a wide range of musical taste and normally listened to rock stations on the way to and from work. I found myself becoming a much more aggressive driver. Racing to be ahead of the other 20 or 30 thousand cars on the freeway. The driving habits of others would push me to the point of complete irritation. And I found my work day starting out in a bad way and coming home I was wound so tight, the transition to home life was difficult at best.

For me it was a matter of changing radio stations. I found the local NPR (National Public Radio) station (www.npr.org or www.wabe.org) and began listening to morning news. Political persuasion aside, the news provided was much more calming. Afternoon drives are filled with classical music and it certainly helps me unwind much better.

The point being, I examined one part of my life and made a change. I made the choice to change my life and attitude which in turn effected others around me. Examine your surroundings, make a change in your life, enjoy the results.

So what is the influence?

Continuing with the idea of you having a choice in how your attitude is effected...there are of course things that influence your thinking. Again from SUMO, the book examines four things that can influence you.

1. Your background influences your thinking.

If you were encouraged to keep trying regardless of outcome while growing up, you will be more likely to take chances as an adult. If you were always ridiculed when attempting things, you are probably one cautious person today. Remember this when you speak to your children.

2. Your previous experiences influence your thinking.

Pretty straight forward I would say. If someone walks in to your store and you happen to be in a short mood, they may very well leave remembering that above all else. Chances are very good that ten other people will hear of that experience.

3. The company you keep influences your thinking.

Hang around with people that always view the work place as a sweat shop, you will likely begin to view it the same. Being around people that can find the positive in working conditions will help you view things in a much better light. It doesn't mean not to associate with the dreary views because if you have a good attitude, you can influence those people as well.

4. The media influences your thinking.

Watch the Brady Bunch - for those now guessing how old I am - and you may begin to believe that family life should always be that way...perfect and with a maid to help out. Watch the news and you may believe the world is ready to self destruct. No, that's just life happening and people would rather watch a train wreck then news of a new art exhibit in town. Temper what it is you watch and read.

Be cognizant of the many things that can influence you. Use that knowledge to your own advantage. "Knowledge is the food of the soul." - Plato

Take a different approach

In his book SUMO, Paul McGee humbly uses a self developed quote..."the most important person you will ever talk to is yourself." This would generally be regarded as thinking and all the while you have to be careful about wallowing or obsessing on thoughts.

Have you ever noticed that by simply obsessing on a subject, in ex; yelling at the driver who cut you off, will effect your driving. You tend to become more aggressive and the revenge factor can come upon you. Your blood pressure rises and tunnel vision sets in and your whole thought pattern becomes that other driver.

It is just another form of how you can allow yourself to be affected and react to situations. If you had simply stopped and thought, "hmmm, maybe they are in a rush to pick up a child from school or maybe they were cut off and were obsessed with getting some other driver." You have the choice to allow or disallow it to affect you.

This translates into every day life, work, home, relationships and church. Everything you do and how everything that happens to you allows you to make that choice. One of the people quoted in the book was William James (1842-1910), who is described as an original thinker in and between the disciplines of physiology, psychology and philosophy.

See the following link for more information on him: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/james/.

One of his quotes that I found was, "Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives." So true as I've seen it in my life and in the lives of others. All of us still get those moments as life can be described as a 'roller coaster of experiences'. I choose not to shudder but to enjoy the ride.

Lisbon From "Christ the King Sanctuary" (Santuário do Cristo Rei)

Christ the King Sanctuary (Santuário do Cristo Rei) was built in 1959 on the south bank of River Tagus, the 110 meter high statue of Christ offers a magnificent panoramic view over Lisbon and River Tagus.
