Being Serious

There are things that are so serious that you can only joke about them.”
Werner Heisenberg

Time to poke a little fun at myself and positive thinking.

It is much easier to be a negative thinker. That path takes no effort. To complain and worry and suffer your ills constantly requires no effort.

We must remember never to under-estimate the benefits of having a positive attitude. Being able to motivate oneself is not easy. To remain positive and keep motivating yourself and others requires work.

The rewards of being positive are much greater than the 'nothing' you will receive by being negative.

Five People

"It is because the human spirit knows, deep down, that all lives intersect. That death doesn't just take someone, it misses someone else, and in the small distance between being taken and being missed, lives are changed." - The Five People You Meet In Heaven

Every thing you do in life has an impact on others around you. The little things you do to offer hope or kindness add up in the lives of other people. You do matter, you do make a difference.

Some time back I wrote about a book that Mitch Albom wrote. The story dealt with the seemingly ordinary life of a man named Eddie. The name of his story is titled, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. In fact, a TV movie was created that nicely visualized the story of how each of our lives is intertwined with others. The movie appeared on originally aired on television and was very faithful to the book.

I recommend you read the book or rent the movie and watch it. And even though the book and movie came out ten years ago, it is good to remind ourselves once in a while. It can change the way you view your life. It reveals that there is a light inside each of us. This light shines out from you in ways we never fully realize.

Allow yourself the ability to impact others. Let your interactions with those around you to be positive ones when possible. Your life matters to others, it has impact on them and does so in the little things you do.

Revealing Possibility

Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Many people go through life never seeing all of the great things which actually exist in this world. Their view is clouded by pessimism and doubt of anything being good. You never give yourself the opportunity to see what is good in life.

The lights can hide what we need.

You go into your backyard and sit looking up at the stars. But as you view them, many of them and most of them are obscured by the city lights around you. Your view of the night sky is of a blackness that holds nearly nothing. There are no stars because in your mind there is a 'nothingness' to the sky. This is what a negative mind sees.

The city lights are distracting you from seeing the real beauty of the night sky. The city lights are the negative thoughts obscuring our view of having a wonderfully positive life. Now go to a rural area, away from those lights and take a look.

The darkness reveals possibility.

All of a sudden the darkness of night becomes sharp and clear. Billions of stars become visible, each of varying brightness and clarity. Your excitement grows as you try to count and pick out each of them. There seem to be too many to count. Yet in the clarity of this night sky, with negative obstructions gone, each of these stars are possibility.

There are so many stars and so many things to be thankful for. Your life, your possibility. Find a way to view your life as a starry night, one of thankfulness. Clear those lights of negativity that prevent you from seeing all of the stars. When you do, your life will be filled with billions of shining possibilities and dreams.

Friday is Good

You will rise by lifting others.” - Robert G. Ingersoll

This day, Good Friday to Christians around the world, is a day in which one man gave his life for all of us. It was the ultimate sacrifice for others. I am not here to sway the religious or non-religious of this day or even Easter. I am writing to state that goodness can come from helping others. That a series or even single sacrifice can change the world.

Does that mean run out and die for all of mankind?

There is possibility in both the religious and philosophical view into why service to others is a good thing. From a religious perspective, we know that Jesus preached of love and the lifting of others. In the finite terms of our own human life, will not making life better for others make our own lives more fulfilling? Is there not something in that for both those whom believe and those that do not?

What then is the reason for our existence?

Whether you believe in creation, evolution or some combination of each; we have the ability to reason and wonder what purpose we are in being here. We can bring purpose to our existence, if only for the shortness of our natural existence. There are many that live a life of always taking, of never giving back, of constant hate or disregard for others. We can live of life of giving, of constant love and compassion for others. We can make life better. We can create purpose to our lives.

There can be purpose to your life.

For me, there is purpose to that man who died on a cross. For me, there is something beyond what exists here and now. But for me, I also believe that I can make a difference while I am here. That I can make life better for others and for those to come. That my children and their children will benefit from what I have done in this lifetime. I can create purpose for my life by helping others.

You can also have an impact on the lives of others, on your children, their children and humanity. It does not take being crucified, nor does it take the wealth of kings. All it takes is love and lifting others. You can create purpose to your life.
