Reaching The Goal
“All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.” - Orison Swett Marden
It does not matter how you get there, it matters that you move towards your goal.
A dream is seeing something you want for your life, vision is how you will move towards your goal.
The first and each subsequent step taken brings you closer, so fix your eyes upon the goal and do not let set backs keep you from succeeding.
Once you arrive at your goal, the path taken may have seemed odd. But you will have arrived. You will achieve what you set out to accomplish.

First Step Taken
"La distance n'y fait rien; il n'y a que le premier pas qui coute."
- Madame Marie Anne du Deffand
Translated: The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that costs.
Our first steps in life vary by age, events and circumstances. When we are first learning to move forward, there will always be a first step required.
It is one step that sets us upon a journey.
Look to the Bible story from the Garden of Eden in which Adam and Eve are banished from the garden. Genesis 3:21-22; The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."
They were banished from the garden, to work the ground outside from which they had been taken. Life was never the same for either of them or for the world. Adam and Eve now had to take those first steps from the garden. Once outside, they had to do something, a journey for the ages; a journey for all of our existence.
It began with first steps taken for those yet to come.
A child is born and generally will begin to walk anywhere from nine to twelve months of age. At that age, think of holding oneself up near a coffee table, looking across a huge room to a toy siting on a small table. The distance is great for such a small child but a first step towards the toy is needed.
With each tentative step, the distance becomes shorter.
A teen reaching graduation in high school, begins looking to a future away from home. It might be college, work or other options but each is planned with a mind for leaving home. Those decisions go through their mind with an uncertain future painted with so much possibility.
With a hug or goodbye, the future embraces them.
Each thing we do begins with that first step taken. Our journey in life, a dream turned into a goal or a vision of things possible require the first step. With never knowing our outcome, we step forward and begin movement towards something.
Away from the old and towards the new light...that first step.

Movement Is Where Memories Live
“She took a step and didn't want to take any more, but she did.” ― Markus Zusak
It has now been a few weeks since a very good friend passed away and similar to only a couple of other occasions in my life, I couldn't move. I was going to work, shopping at the store and doing those things one does to live.
Getting back to really living was the difficult part.
Grief and loss can have that effect upon you. What I felt is nothing compared to my friend's family and telling you this story is not meant to compare levels of hurt and pain. It is meant to express that life can stop you in your tracks.
Life may go on around you, but the circumstance can make you feel like you are stuck in your tracks. Unable to think clearly, unable to grab hold of living, unable to breathe.
Movement is what springs us back into going on with our lives. The act of getting up in the morning, having breakfast, going to work and all of those other things we do are what make us live. Those acts of living shake us from standing still.
Memories of a loved one, a friend or whatever the loss occurred stir within you. These memories push from your soul, to your heart and it beat with anticipation of movement once again. Pushing you to live again, to think more clearly, to breathe once again.
Memories living through your movement, your life.
Soon you will find your life in elegant motion. Clarity will be restored. Life will be birthed again in joy.

Get Back On Board
"As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.” - John Steinbeck
We move through life at a pace comfortable with the progress we want to make. In search of our dreams we keep moving forward through the maze of others. The focus of that movement is towards the goals we have established for our lives.
Then one day you get tired of the movement, feeling no progress is being made. We stop and wonder about our life which sometimes turns into self pity. All the while, life keeps moving past us even faster. We can stand on the side of the tracks watching the train go by, or choose to engage in the movement once again.
If we stop, as Steinbeck says, the moment becomes much more than a moment. So much opportunity passes us by if we adapt a victim mentality. The type of mentality which believes the whole world needs to stop just for them.
Very much like a train stop, people engage to see how you are doing. They will genuinely care for your situation but the train can not stay still for long. The whistle blows and the train leaves the station, leaving you standing alone once again.
Be willing to get back on board the train should you have had cause to pause for a moment or two.
Choose not to be a victim in life and become fully part of it.
Find out where the train can take you and experience the wonder of it.

Using an Escalator
"Assume that whatever situation you are facing at the moment is exactly the right situation you need to ultimately be successful. This situation has been sent to help you become better, to help you expand and grow." - Brian Tracy
There was a great commercial on television that was so good at amusing me, it failed to actually help me remember what was being sold or promoted. The advertisement showed a few people riding an escalator which stopped in mid-movement.
One person sullenly asks "what shall we do?"
Another yells for help.
While another cries out that her cell phone is dead.
The immediate problem they face has them frozen in fear of not knowing what to do. They are locked in indecision, unable to clearly think or make a choice.
As they stand there, a fourth person bravely ascends the stairs on his own power. Walking up each step, happily making his way to the top. The stranded people watch in amazement as this person moves past them, boldly and without hesitation.
This scene is sort of like watching someone rise and achieve success. We stand still wondering what we should do. Yet if you watch those achieving success, they keep moving despite any obstacles.
If an obstacle emerges, it may cause us to deviate from our chosen path.
We keep moving though, adjusting to the changing conditions.
We keep moving, we keep pushing forward not allowing obstacles to stop our movement.
Never let a failed escalator stop your climb to achievement. Keep moving. And stay inspired my friends.

Where To From Here
"Success is not a matter of getting it right every time. Success comes from continuing to persist until you eventually get it right." - Unknown
The phrase "where to from here" is a question you hear often enough or even ask yourself plenty of times. You reach a point in your journey of life where you wonder what to do next. The same can be said about achieving a goal. Either way, you run out of steam or ideas and now you are just not sure what to do.
Richard Bach said, "There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they're necessary to reach the places we've chosen to go."
So the decision of "where to from here" should not be all that hard. It is in the continual movement you will reach your destination.
Your past will have taught and given you a certain instinct on which path to follow. Do not be afraid that it might be the wrong path. Consider each path, a path of learning. Each day, each experience, each road we take teaches us more.
There will be those people who have seemingly taken a straight and direct path to their success. But if you really chart their personal map in life, you find it filled with many of the turns and detours you have taken.
The notable thing is they never stood still for very long.
You may be right here on your map of life, but the only place to "go from here" is in any direction. Just keep moving.
And stay inspired my friends.

Confusion Cleared
"Everywhere the sun is shining; All around the world, it's shining; But cold winds blow across your mind." -"Confusion" by Electric Light Orchestra
There are times in our life when nothing seems to makes sense. We feel we have lost all sense of direction and become confused about our place in time. It can be a frightening time filled with anxiety and often times depression. The sounds of others trying to encourage you are faint and distant. You have simply fallen into a state of mind in which you really cannot hear, but desperately want to.
Confusion is medically defined as "the inability to think with your usual speed or clarity, including feeling disoriented and having difficulty paying attention, remembering, and making decisions."
Confusion can be brought on by numerous conditions such as alcohol (obviously), concussions, fevers, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, lack of sleep, nutritional deficiencies, or a host of other things. Seeking out medical advice is always good to ensure what seems simple isn't something bigger.
And sometimes confusion is a state of emotion caused by events going on in your life. It could be your relationship with another person, a job-related decision or one of life's many circumstances. We fight to control the emotion and work through it ourselves, but eventually it grows only worse. You lose your sense of direction and struggle to decide which way to go. So you stand still, caught in this state of confusion.
It is here, at this point, when you have to simply choose a point in all of the confusion and head towards it. The idea is not to figure out necessarily which point is the correct one, just head out in one direction.
Movement will cause change in the confusion.
You can always change direction again, but standing still doesn't solve your condition. It sounds so simple but all of us know that confusion breeds indecision and it becomes difficult to rationalize. So in reality, there is no simple answer, only advice to choose something and move towards it.
The cloud of confusion will eventually begin to clear in your life. The sun will look brighter, more stars will shine in the night sky and your life will carry on, clear of the confusion that once held you firmly in one place.

Suppose
"We dance round in a ring and suppose, but the secret sits in the middle and knows." ~Robert Frost
The word suppose is a pretty simple one to understand. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as "to lay down tentatively as a hypothesis, assumption, or proposal." An example might be, suppose I quit sitting on the couch and took a walk. Or possibly, suppose I stopped complaining about my job and did something to improve my lot.
There are many supposes out there each of us carry. Suppose I did this or suppose I did that? But suppose you actually did something about it? Suppose you actually got out and walked more? Suppose you took a class to improve your knowledge? Suppose you loved a little more and complained a little less? Suppose you quit supposing and did?
To paraphrase a quote by the great boxer Muhammad Ali, "Suppose you view the world the same at fifty as you did at twenty; then you have just wasted thirty years of your life." So much will be passed by if we never act upon our goals or dreams.
Getting oneself to create movement towards a goal is easy to talk about. The difficult part is actually creating that movement. But once you start with the slightest move, the momentum will build and help sustain your movement towards achievement.
You walk a little more, you read a little more, you even love others a little more. The dream starts to become less of a dream and more of a reality. And once reality is in sight, it grows bigger each day as you move from suppose to will. The suppose in your life will finally be reality.
Suppose it all could really happen? It will when we stop supposing.

So Move
"To accomplish great things, we must dream as well as act." -Anatole France
For all of the dreaming and planning that we do, movement in action is required to realize those dreams. Each of us know of people that constantly talk of what they want in life but never begin taking actions to achieve it.
Those people may very well be you, always thinking of greater things for your life. Planning and assessing how to get to a new point in your life becomes a daily activity. Yet you never get any closer to the dream.
Why? It is because you make no movement in your life to actually go after those dreams. Without action, a dream remains a dream. With action, a dream can become reality.
Dream of great things, dream of all that you want....then take action.

Don't Hold Back
"Don't hold back - jump in every day with a great attitude. Now is the time." -Travis Brown
Not everyone has to go through traumatic or large life changing issues to get to a point of choosing a better life. For many people though it surely seems that way. I have no figures or colorful graphs to illustrate my point. But the human mind is such that it tends to take a very large knock in the head to make change.
I would tend to believe it has to do with our 'hard-headed' mindset when it comes to staying with one particular way of doing things. I was one that went through life with a single thought on how things worked and my path through it. I felt that positive attitude was the only thing I needed along with working hard. Just keep doing what I'm doing and it will all work out.
The thing we forget is that things change. Ways of getting through life need to constantly be evaluated, adjusted and different paths adopted. When we wear blinders, so much opportunity and possibility get missed.
Having a great and positive attitude is important. It also means looking for new ways, seeing potential in new ways. Being open to change will give you new opportunity for keeping your life on track. You adjust and change when finding life going the wrong way. Allow yourself to see new ways of doing things. Change causes movement and with movement the possibility of a better life.

Your Freeway
"The best path through life is the highway." -Henri Frederic Amiel
One morning as I was driving to work, my usual route took me from side streets to a major road and eventually onto the freeway. My commute is an early one but short. I normally head out for work around 5:30am and during these times, the traffic on the freeway can be unexpectedly busy. It requires the ritual of merging into and yielding at times to the cars already moving.
Each of those cars, those people, are driving towards destinations possibly similar to yours. Others might be heading towards home, on vacation or simply out for a drive. Although I would hope at 5:30am, insomnia doesn't cause one to get up and simply drive around.
Yet each of us had to merge onto the freeway to get where we needed to go. We each needed to step into this flow of life flowing past us. It required us to have confidence that we could speed up and become part of life flying by so quickly. We merge into the stream of life and head towards our goal.
One could easily remain parked along the side of the road. Maybe still parked in your driveway, trying to muster the courage to even start the car. We each encounter those moments of doubt. We wonder if we have the ability to move forward in life. This self-doubt can have a paralyzing effect on our ability to achieve anything in life.
In order to achieve your dreams, you have to learn to trust your own ability and to believe in yourself. Not many of us can afford to have someone drive us to success. In fact, those that can most likely started like you, sitting in their car, in their driveway, questioning themselves.
The difference is that they started the car and backed out of the driveway. They drove down the street, onto a major street and then passed that freeway entrance sign. They merged into life's stream of movement and believed in what they could achieve.
You can do the same thing by believing in yourself. Drive past the freeway entrance sign and get into the flow of life. Head towards your dreams and let a new world open up before your eyes.

Move to get Acknowledged
"Forget about being world famous, it's hard enough just getting the automatic doors at the supermarket to acknowledge our existence." -Doug Coupland
Walking Alone
Not long ago, I was walking down the sidewalk in a large metropolitan city. There were scores of people walking towards and with me. Some would be entering stores while others would be running out in order to catch a bus or taxi. I am sure you have been in a similar situation, lots of people passing by and you being one of them.
What I remember most is that nearly everyone was oblivious to each other. Each person was wrapped up in their own world. There seemed to be no acknowledgement of the fact there were others in close proximity.
I certainly understand that people have thoughts on their mind, have places to go, appointments to keep. But on that crowded street, I felt lonely and that feeling was going against some of our basic human needs for esteem and belonging.
Hierarchy of Needs
An American psychologist, named Abraham Maslow, wrote in 1943 a paper called "A Theory of Human Motivation". In it he described his "Hierarchy of Needs" which is a pyramid depicting the levels of human needs, psychological and physical.
What I found interesting is that if I looked at someone, smiled or said hello, that loneliness collapsed. In nearly every case where I did, the other person smiled or responded nicely and without any rude gestures. It was one person acknowledging the other in a world filled with too much to do and too little time to think of others.
Extending a Smile
Everyone needs some level of acknowledgement in their life. It validates our existence and raises our hopes of a great life. There are many things that being acknowledged impacts at both physiological and psychological levels. Being lonely can lead to a lack of happiness in life, but there are ways for you to combat it.
Gretchen Rubin wrote The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun and also hosts a blog with the same name, The Happiness Project. She wrote in a Psychology Today article, about strategies you can use to combat loneliness.
In short (read the entire article for more detail);
Movement creates change
It was this last step, a step out, movement in which I acknowledged others. In return they acknowledged me and the lonely walk became a walk with friends. It changes the whole atmosphere.
Sometimes, to change our place in life, we have to create the movement. We have to be the ones to step out, acknowledge others by smiling and simply saying hello. You will be amazed how it changes your life when you change someone else's life.

Color Outside The Lines
"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." -Albert Einstein
As I write this article, I am a couple of days past having submitted the manuscript for my fourth book. You will hear more about the book as the days progress, but writing it had the usual ups and downs. I am not a very disciplined writer in respect to creating an outline to frame a story. I do get a general idea in three or four parts of how I want the story to flow. But then I simply begin writing, letting words flow from inside like water flowing from a spigot.
Sometimes though, the spigot gets turned off with barely a drip of water. The flow stops and you could definitely call it "writers block." It is a frustrating thing to go through because the harder you try, the more void that occurs. It happens to many people so I know that I am not unique in that sense.
It was interesting recently to find that a sister-in-law of mine, very talented in the arts, was having something kind of similar happening. We were gathered as a family due to the recent passing of my mother-in-law. The siblings and their spouses all sat around eating, drinking wine, and talking about our lives with Mom. So I was surprised to hear my sister-in-law indicate that she had gone dry in her creativity. She was struggling to find the inspiration that would turn the spigot back on.
A brother-in-law offered a very good idea that can push you to creativity as well. The method is to force yourself into a deadline. In example, I had a deadline in order to get my manuscript completed. That can be a very good motivational thing, but a lot of times it doesn't unleash the creativity of the writing. I could tell that deadlines were not what she wanted or needed at this point in her life.
She then told us a story about her mother. One day when she was quite young, Mom was sitting with her at the table, chatting as a mother and daughter do. Mom was coloring in her daughter's coloring book. The story sounded as if they were talking about life in general and as they talked, the coloring Mom was doing was outside the lines.
Now most of us have taken crayons to a coloring book when we were young. We are instructed to stay inside the lines and use the various colors to fill in the picture. But this time Mom was coloring the areas outside the lines. I had to stop and think about what my sister-in-law was saying.
It occurred to me this was an expressive way of saying, "think outside the box." Step back and look at things differently from what conventional wisdom tells us to do. In my regular job, when troubleshooting a technical problem, when all logic fails, I employ this same method. You might call it "whacky" thinking or even "crazy" ideas, but it works. Like a broken record, trying the same thing over and over keeps you in the same spot.
I told my sister-in-law to keep after it, the creativity will come back. Take a piece of paper, just start pushing ink lines across the empty space of white. Crinkle up the paper, unfold and neatly fold it, wet the edges, and maybe end up throwing it away. Just change up what it is you are doing.
My own writers block got solved during the writing of my book by simply writing random words. I began typing cryptic and nonsensical phrases, and then printed it out and drew on it. An example is shown below. Don't ask me how it works but it works for me.
It takes several of these to get it happening again. Sometimes it is other things, but what it takes is thinking outside the box. Trying something different can be the thing that sparks a change. What we need to do though is change it up, don't sit and wait for it to happen. Movement causes change, movement will give you the chance to intersect with opportunity, and movement will keep your life moving forward.

Move Today
"To me, if life boils down to one thing, it's movement. To live is to keep moving." -Jerry Seinfeld
I have a pile of timbers sitting in my backyard. These are the treated eight foot long ones used for edging or building short retaining walls. The timbers have been sitting idle for nearly a year while I make a decision to actually do something with them. Yes I have a plan for them and it just requires me to begin the work.
What you will find is a neatly stacked pile that is up off the ground to protect them. It is a pile that seems to have been stacked for long term storage. What you will also see are the weeds and vines having grown up around and through the pile. There will be work to get the timbers ready for actual use.
It reminds me of lists we make for ourselves. Those pieces of scrap paper or neatly written journals that contain our dreams. The list sits nicely in the desk drawer where time, heat and humidity slowly age the piece of paper. One day you finally decide to act upon those dreams. You pull open the drawer only to find that the ink has faded.
Your dreams have faded on the paper. The paper itself has dried so badly that it crumbles in your hands. You try to piece together what the list contained, straining to make sense of it all. Our dreams that sit idle will tend to fade into distant memory.
Dreams will never be realized if not put into action. When you make movement towards your dreams, you put yourself closer to realizing them. Life is all about movement, life is about never sitting idle waiting for something to happen. Don't let your dreams crumble away with inaction.
What will it take to get you moving? Check out my vBlog Primms Attitude 08242011 up on YouTube. Don't wait for an earthquake to get you up and moving. Get up today and make movement in your life. Do it now, as if your life depended upon it.

Noah Created Movement
"March on. Do not tarry. To go forward is to move toward perfection. March on, and fear not the thorns, or the sharp stones on life's path." ~Kahlil Gibran
If you could share something with the world, would you wait until it was perfect? Or would you get it out there even if the rough edges had yet to be smoothed over?
My brother-in-law's grandson has learned to sign pretty darn well while still only being 7 years old. His mother has been hearing impaired since birth if memory serves me correctly, so signing is a matter of everyday activity. It becomes natural over time, but learning both spoken language and sign language is a feat in itself.
So with the perfection of a seven year old boy, the video below is him signing the story of Noah's Ark.
The words being signed are as follows;
So he opened the door, all the animals came into the ark. He put all the animals where they should be. His family packed everything. And when he was going in water, God said “Noah your family is safe, now you can go to a different country.” And he was going to a far away country with storms coming, rain and lightning, all over every where.
After the storm he was in a different country. God said “You have done a good job keeping your family safe.” He was happy that God said that. So he saw a colorful sky, he saw a rainbow in the sky. And that is all the story about Noah's ark.
My intent was to show you the innocent beauty of a child telling an age-old story. It was also my intent to give an example of someone moving forward with what they know. While not perfect or completely polished, a young child bravely shows what he can do to all that will watch.
Each of us need to move forward in our lives, unafraid that we may not be perfect. The polished edges are not yet apparent but only with movement can they be smoothed. A rock tumbler will do no good if it sits motionless. It is in the movement and tumbling of the rocks inside which accomplishes the polished finish. The same can be said of our lives. When we create movement and step out from being idle, only then will great things begin to happen.
Take the example of a young boy bravely stepping out to show the world his signing ability. He has started a movement in his life that will bring wonders to everyone around him. In return, the rough and tumble experiences will cause him to shine even more.
Create that kind of movement in your life.

Reaching A Goal
Here we are on what many may consider the beginning of the last month of summer. August 1 in the year 2007 and only a few weeks left until many school systems here in the U.S. open their doors.
One last chance to get to the beach, the local swimming pool or a quick vacation. One last chance to prepare for final months of this year. Getting yourself ready to complete all of those goals that you set back on January 1, 2007.
At MyGoals, to stay on track they suggest the following. "First, accept personal responsibility for staying on track. It's not up to anyone else, just you. You alone decide what you want to accomplish, and when." It was you that made the decision to accomplish those things in your heart and mind. So accept the idea that it is you that needs to get them completed.
The final months of any year can be busy and quite distracting. Life has a way of pulling us off our charted course. But with the right attitude and conviction, you can keep your focus on achieving your goals. I read a quote once from a person I think was Michael Hanson who said, "to will is to select a goal, determine a course of action that will bring one to that goal, and then hold to that action till the goal is reached. The key is action.”
Action, movement, continuance towards your goal is what you must remember. Change which will result in your goal is caused by movement. Keep moving towards your goal and accomplish that which you seek.

Your House Called Life
When you have made a choice in life, you have to take on all that comes with that choice. You do not get to choose just the 'bits' that you like, you have to deal with all of it. It is like buying a new home. You walk into a home you are considering purchasing and you really love the family room. It has beautiful fireplace, cozy atmosphere and wonderful sunlight. Maybe even the kitchen area overlooks the family area, an added enjoyment.
So you purchase the home and move in. Yet the backyard is small and borders a yard with barking dogs. The home itself has too small of a master bathroom. Maybe the garage door does not work very well or the furnace does not heat the house well during the winter. All of these negative things are yours to deal with. You have a choice at this point.
Choose to complain constantly about them, which will diminish your enjoyment of the good things your home has to offer. Or you can change those things you do not like. Talk to the neighbors and get to know them. After a while, you will be able to bring up the subject of the dogs, the neighbors will likely be more willing to try and change the situation. Expand your master bath, get the garage door fixed or research what changes you could make to improve the heating conditions.
All of this requires you to make movement, to make a change. By doing nothing, you change nothing. Your life, like your home is your responsibility and only you can improve it. Take charge, begin now and let change improve your life.
