Judging Book Covers

Don't judge a man by his opinions, but what his opinions have made of him.” ―Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

I am sure many of you remember the stories that have been told over and over again. It was also very hard to miss all of the videos and clips on the various news programs. You may have even watched all of it unfold on television as everyone collectively held their breath awaiting the first notes to fill the microphone.

I am speaking of the night that Susan Boyle walked onto the stage of the British television show Britain's Got Talent. It was April 11, 2009 when she shocked many people by beautifully singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables. She went on to take second place to a dance troupe called Diversity.

Did nearly everyone of us judge the book cover at first?

Intellectually we each know we should not judge another simply by the way they look. We have been told over and over again "not to judge a book by its cover." But researchers have found that outside appearance does matter in people's judgments on all manner of issues. As the lead researcher, Chia-Jung Tsay (both highly honored musician and a psychologist at University College, London) indicated, "There is something about visual information that is better able to convey cues such as passion or involvement or creativity. These elements are very much a part of high-quality performance."

So our opinions, our judgments are shaped by what we see. While we know that judging someone simply by appearance is not the complete story, the folks that advertise and try to sell stuff to us know we do anyway. Even economists and political psychologists have found that voters can predict the winners of elections when they watch videos of the candidates, with the sound off. If you believe our politicians are shallow, chances are we voted them into office more on appearance then by substance.

Is all of this bad?

No, not really. We are human and we have been endowed with many senses, which we use to make many decisions in life. My belief is in the biology of our make up, the fight or flight decisions we sometimes have to make happen subconsciously. Visual judgment is a nearly instantaneous piece of information that is used in the raw makeup of who we are as humans.

Think of yourself walking down a partially dark street, no one else around and someone walking towards you. Your first instinct is to judge the appearance and manner in which that person is walking towards you. The dust cover of that person is being judged at that very moment. All of this is happening in response to you trying to assess the situation. It is quick and as the person approaches, your intellect starts to process more information such as the person is whistling or maybe talking on the phone.

Does that mean we should have seen Susan Boyle come on stage and ran in fright? Of course not, but our biology is still there, just under the covers and holds a strong place in how we respond. Our intellect is slower and processes many more sources of information. We do this hundreds of times a day whether we realize it or not.

Quick visual judgment is going to happen.

Just try to understand that it goes on and if you use your visual information along with all of the information to be collected, you will have greater control over your own reactions. You will be better equipped to understand when marketers, politicians and a host of other stimuli are trying to manipulate your responses. It will allow you to make better decisions in your life.

Dream the dream and always know the cover of a book will never tell the entire story.

Who Do You Love

"The best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more, that plants the fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. That’s what I hope to give you forever." –The Notebook

This week is a week full of love as Valentine's Day approaches on Thursday, February 14th. It is a week in which our focus turns to the ones we love. We are reminded of why we first fell in love, of whom we love, our children, our parents and our God. It is a week in which we want to be loved and love others.

And while we will send cards and flowers, cute candy sayings and all forms of love's expressions, do we really understand what love is?

In my book Love Is, I examine what the true meaning of what love is. Can we experience love by only receiving it? Does love represent taking or giving? What do we truly obtain by accepting the power of what love can do in our lives?

There is something great packed into the words written in that book and as you will find out, words that will change your life and the way you think about love. What remains of our lives when all else is gone? If we take away possessions, notoriety and all of the other distractions that consume our life, what is always left in our life?

And it all reminds me to ask, "who do you love?"

New Books, New Stories

"Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit." -Khalil Gibran

As the days pass, I will begin to build up to the announcement of my new book. The manuscript is with the publisher and potentially a few edits and changes to make, are all that stand between now and publication. This book marks a slight shift from the past couple of books, CHANGED LIVES and LIVE THE JOURNEY.

In my new book called LOVE IS, the intent is to take you through a series of stories that will give you new perspective on what love is. There is a wide variety of good and many not so good definitions of what love is on display and talked about these days. This book should bring it all back to an easy and healthy way to know and understand what love really is.

Yes, I still use my own life experiences to illustrate what love does in life, the lessons learned, and the power of love in our lives. I also bring it around to one of the greatest love stories ever told. You will recognize it and in my book I attempt to break down the meaning of each sentence for you.

The name of that love story will have to wait, but if you think about it, you'll know which one I'm talking about. If not, once the book is out, you can read and find out what a huge impact love, the right kind of love, can have on your life.

Foot Prints Of Change

Today is the second day that distribution of my book grows to many more outlets. It is a neat process to follow and watch as its availability grows. Your own dreams will take time to grow and develop as well.

In the coming days, I will provide excerpts from the book. I will also look forward to hearing your comments. The ability to take a dream and develop it into thoughts and actions is in every one of you. Begin by simply doing something.

I began by writing one blog article. I developed my own style over time and as I wrote, I read more articles and books. Before I knew it, I had written hundreds of articles and worked through much of my thoughts for the second book.

So take a step forward and make movement in your life. Change something in your life and let it grow.

Attitude In Words

I have been on vacation the past few days and am recharged and ready to start writing again this week. This recent trip was a 'history' trip that I take annually with a few friends. We visit historical sites in a particular area of the country. No different then other years, the friendship and good times with my friends always refills my spirit.

The other good news is that my new book, "Attitude In Words" is now available for purchase. A great daily read for you that will certainly try to motivate and inspire you to greatness. All proceeds go to various charities that are of the kind which help others in life.

Attitude In Words

"Attitude In Words" the book is coming soon. I've written my first book and I am getting ready to publish. I'm excited about it being out there and more excited knowing that it may help millions of people out there improve their life.

Getting this book written was one of those 'first steps' that I have spoken about many times before. There are dreams that each of us envision, but it take us acting upon those visions at some point. What happens is that the vision becomes a reality - the finality of believing, acting and then realizing it.

First on the list of people that encouraged me is my wife Laura. She kept pushing me to make it a reality. She made sure that I understood this book would have a huge impact upon lots of people. Secondly are all of my kids, each one that has this touch of greatness and goodness in their lives. By watching them, I've learned so much from them; even at my age it is still possible to learn.

There are others that make a difference such as Dean Baker, a friend that gave me the final "poke in the back" to get it done. By the way, he makes some very good Beef Jerky that maybe one day you will be able to purchase. Dean and Jill Sweetman along with many others associated with them are a constant inspiration to me.

You need to find those people that can do the same thing in your life. Surround your self with inspriing and positive people. They will lift you during bad times, they will sustain you during the good times and your life will be enrichened.

So look forward to my first book, I'm excited and hope you will find it an inspiration as well.

Attitude In Words

In the next month or two, I hope to have published my first book. It has been a long time coming and the recent push was inspired by a friend of mine, Dean Baker. Dean is one of those guys that says, "come on, let's do this thing." He gave me that one last push without me asking for it. It showed me that people are paying attention.

So we are in the editing stage, the cover is being designed and then the publishing will start. I will certainly give you information on how to order the book. Then I will be interested in your comments.

Stay tuned...
